HTC One X+ review: it's the One X, and then some

HTC One X review (UK version)

A spec bump in the middle of a product cycle? All the cool cats do it these days, even if they risk alienating customers who just bought what they thought was this year's flagship device. HTC has actually played this game for a while, first with the Sensation XE, which acted as a mid-term replacement for the original Sensation and now, with the One X+ which treads all over the One X's toes. However, with this latest handset, the manufacturer has some justification: the One X+ comes with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, whereas the global One X maxed out at 32GB and the AT&T version was only 16GB. Since there's no microSD expansion on these phones, it's possible to argue that the One X+ is a sensible addition, which caters specifically to storage-hungry power users and audiophiles. (Note: We'll be reviewing the HSPA+ UK version of this handset here, and comparing it mainly to the HSPA+ One X. We'll test the US-destined LTE variant very soon.)

There are other improvements aside from the bigger storage option, of course. The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor has had a speed bump to 1.7GHz -- perhaps in an effort to challenge the Galaxy S III's benchmarking might. There's a larger 2,100mAh battery to stay in step with that more power-hungry silicon; the front camera module has been replaced with a higher-res chip and better image processing; and, there's also some new audio circuitry to improve the speaker's sound quality. The One X+ also runs HTC's updated Sense 4+ skin, based on Jelly Bean, which will eventually arrive on older One-series phones as well. As for the rest of the spec sheet, all the good and not-so-good stuff from the One X has carried over -- the stunning 4.7-inch, 1,280 x 720 Super LCD2 display is still here, thank goodness, and so is the 8-megapixel f/2.0 rear camera. However, there's still only 1GB of RAM (LG and Samsung flagships boast double that). So, what's needed here is an upshot: if you haven't made the leap to a 2012 superphone just yet, how does the One X+ carry itself relative to its cheaper predecessor and the latest competition? Read on and we'll endeavor to find out.

Israeli TV star makes grab for Netanyahu voters

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A TV personality-turned-politician whose centrist party could be a key player in Israel's parliament after elections made a bid for right-wing voters on Tuesday with a call for Palestinians to accept some Israeli West Bank settlements.

Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid (There is a Future) party gave his first speech on Israel's relations with the Palestinians at a settlement in the occupied West Bank, a move commentators said was calculated to appeal to voters from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party.

Lapid said that only granting Palestinians their own state could end the conflict but that "The Palestinians will have to recognize that reality has changed since 1967 and the settlement blocs will stay within Israeli borders."

Polls show Yesh Atid, formed this year by Lapid, formerly anchor of a popular television news show, winning up to 15 of parliament's 120 seats in the January 22 vote.

Most polls predict right-wing and religious parties closely allied with Netanyahu will win a solid majority in the election. But the prime minister drew criticism from some in Likud when he announced last week he was merging the party with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu.

While some polls have shown Netanyahu's merged party may win up to 42 seats, as much as they jointly hold today, commentators say the move could backfire with Lieberman's hardline views driving voters away.

Speaking at the Ariel settlement bloc, Lapid accused Netanyahu of failing to revive peace negotiations that broke down in 2010 in a dispute over settlement construction. Yesh Atid will not join a government that does not return to talks, he said.

Israel has sent mixed signals in the past over whether the Ariel enclave, with a population of 17,000, would be included among major settlement blocs it says will remain in Israeli hands permanently after any peace deal.

The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with east Jerusalem as its capital. Israel captured those territories in a 1967 war. The Palestinians say that Israeli settlements deny them a viable contiguous state.

In another nod to the right, Lapid said Jerusalem was non-negotiable. "Jerusalem will remain under Israeli sovereignty and will not be divided," Lapid said. Israel annexed east Jerusalem in a move that was not recognized internationally.

Lapid challenged Netanyahu's stance on Iran, saying Israel should rely on international pressure to curb what Israel and the West believe is Iran's drive toward nuclear weapons. The Netanyahu government has said in the past it could use force.

Tehran says its nuclear efforts are peaceful.

Meanwhile, two wild cards could threaten Netanyahu's lead. Former centrist prime minister Ehud Olmert and his ex-foreign minister Tzipi Livni are mulling comebacks and are expected to announce in the coming weeks whether they are joining the race.

The Redheaded Hostess ? What are your favorite games?

Oct 30 2012

With the Holiday season fast approaching, and the Fall weather in full swing

my family has been in ?game mode? for some reason.

We just feel like playing games.

And I love it. ?There is something so bonding and worthwhile when you sit down at a table together to play a game. So many memories are made.

So I want to ask you?

What are your favorite family games?

I am looking for everything from good ol? classics to the latest and greatest.

So I will start.

I don?t know how old this game is ? but my brother and his wife introduced it to us.

It is called ?Spot It?, and it comes in a little can like this.

Each card has these little pictures on it ? and I don?t know how they did it, but each card has one match with every other card.

There are a few ways to play this game, but this is how we do it:

1- You put one card upside down in the center and then deal out the rest evenly with the players.

2- You then flip the center card over and you frantically try to find what matches on your card. ?When you find the match you yell it out ?ladybug!? (or whatever your match is) and then set your card on top of the center card. ?Your card is now the new card everyone is trying to match. It is maddening because so often you just barely ?spot? your match and then someone sets their card down and you now have to find a totally new match.

3- The first one out of cards wins.

Let me tell you why I like this game.

  • First: ?it is addicting
  • Second: ?all ages can play
  • Third: ?each round lasts no more than a couple of minutes
  • Fourth: ?because the rounds are so short, people can jump in and out of the game as different responsibilities pull them away. ?(This game went on for over an hour at my mom?s the other night. ?I think I played at three different intervals).
  • Fifth: ?Its just some cards. ?Easy game to set up and clean up.
  • Sixth: ?it is just plain fun

Each tin has 54 cards. ?If you have a big family, you may want two IDENTICAL games.

OK? there is my recommendation.

What are yours?

Raw Talent

Raw Talent

I love art. I have always loved art. I?m good at art. I have always been good at art. Art came easily to me and I found out, at an early age, I had a knack for it. I could draw, paint, weave, sculpt, and design. I had what they call raw talent.

My name is Iron-head Bradley. They call me iron-head because I?m hardheaded, hard to understand, and hard to get along with, at times. But, I can create some of the most beautiful artwork you will ever see ? and do it with ease.

So, when I went online hoping to learn about designing web sites I had ?promoting-my-own-artwork? in the back of my mind. I was going to get it out there. I wanted to show off all this creativity everyone has been ooh-ing and ahh-ing over. I wanted my own online business and I was willing to do what it took.

Ok, so, you already know I am an artsy kind of guy. What you might not know is that I love ALL things art. If it is art related it is Iron-head Bradley related. I can?t get enough of art or of the art world. It is in the blood. You could say I?m artistically inclined.

Though I didn?t have a website of my own, I could find my way around the internet. I had enough savvy to find the information I was looking for and I had a good idea of what would or wouldn?t work for me. I wish I could say I spent days searching hundreds of sites before I found the ideal site but it popped up only after about 15 searches.

I knew it when I saw it. I knew the site I was looking at would teach me everything I needed to know about selling my artwork online. I had seen a lot of web based art sites and really hated the ones that just dealt with 1 area of art ? like just paintings and nothing else.

The broader minded art sites might include drawing or photography with the paintings. The best art web sites, like the ones I like, are real broad. They can tell you all about drawings, paintings, sculpture, popular art events, art news, art classes and a whole slew of other art topics.

The site I found for building my site is really the ideal. It will teach me how to build my website, get good traffic going to it, and even help me to sell a masterpiece or two. And, all this on a website that focuses on art-based and art related things.

Some web sites are just plain better than others.

Business Travel Stress, Defined | Gadling.com

Business travel stress is caused by a number of reasons. Just being out of the office can make communication and keeping up with ongoing projects a challenge. Some travelers cope well with the challenges of working on the road. Others, not so much. A recent survey by Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) polled more than 6,000 frequent business travelers from nine global corporations, and found that stress tends to fall into three categories.

Time lost when a traveler might be working but instead has to stand in a security line can add stress. Thinking "If I was in the office right now, I could be doing something productive" adds more stress.

Surprises caused by an unscheduled event that disrupts travel is another. Major storms with a cascading effect on airports not even in the affected area commonly add "Will I make my connection?" stress.

Routine breakers that cause an inability to stick to regularly scheduled home activities count too. Activities that are easy to do at home like exercising, watching television or surfing the web add stress when not done on the road.

The biggest stress factor of all? Lost Luggage.

"Losing one's baggage requires replacing the lost content, often in a short space of time. This presents multiple uncertainties under tight deadlines, which produced considerable stress," Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) said in an Executive Travel article.

Coming in at number two on the list of 33 possible stress triggers was being without an Internet connection, or having an unreliable one. Third place was having to fly in coach on a medium or long-haul trip, followed by flight delays, inconvenient arrival or departure times, having to stay in a low-category hotel, inconvenient hotel locations, and last-minute travel.

Ernst & Young Warns British Film, TV Biz On Corruption And Bribery ...

Earlier this month, the UK?s Serious Fraud Office said it would toughen its stance on bribery, meaning criminal penalties could become more commonplace. Today, Ernst & Young warns that the next front for enforcers could be the British film and television industries as companies increasingly work in emerging markets, and says the business should ?heed corruption and bribery risks in financing and making films abroad.? The report notes that ?In the U.S., enforcers have begun to ask questions of studios about potential bribery of foreign officials showing the extent of filmmaking?s exposure to such risks.? In April, the U.S. majors received letters of inquiry from the SEC regarding their China dealings, although it is considered unlikely the Hollywood studios are involved in any wrongdoing.

In the U.S., there are training exercises in place to teach employees the ins and outs of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. But in the UK, whereas oil and gas industry employees ?have a mindset to fight corruption,? the report says, ?it may not yet be ingrained in the entertainment industry? which is becoming more and more international. UK filmmakers received a funding boost this year which promotes inward investment, foreign exports and gives priority to bolstering growth and relations with Brazil and China, forming part of the basis for the E&Y bulletin.

E&Y partner Jonathan Middup said: ?Film and TV making is particularly exposed to bribery and corruption risk. Films are shot all over the world and in some cases they are in countries where corruption is commonplace. There is a lot of cash being used and there is a need to get access to areas closed to the public, creating a lot of potential touch points with local governments or even the military.? In some countries, how one accesses those things can run afoul of UK law even though they might be accepted practices in the country in question.

Here are Ernst & Young?s tips for avoiding pitfalls:

? Control of film distribution by one party, which can be government-owned, can increase the risk of corruption. Filmmakers need to make sure they are not making inappropriate payments to gain access to this market.

? Gift-giving is important in certain cultures, but under some circumstances could be construed as a bribe. Filmmaking also may need access to areas or locations closed to the public which may risk so called ?facilitation? payments which are illegal under the Bribery Act. Close attention should be given to avoid making such payments.

? Under the Bribery Act failure to carry out checks on third parties leaves a company open to unlimited fines if it was to have a bribery or corruption problem. Joint ventures and third parties doing business on filmmakers? behalf should be background checked ? film companies need to know who they are dealing with and what relationship they have to the government.

Purdue focused on finding a way to prevent breast cancer | WLFI ...

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - New research in breast cancer is ongoing all around the world and Purdue University is playing a major role.

In early October of this year, Purdue hosted the Third International Breast Cancer Prevention Symposium. People from all over the world, including researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), attended seminars on campus.

They all came together to talk prevention in West Lafayette. It's an area where research has been lacking, according to researcher Sophie Lelievre, Ph.D.

Lelievre and her team are working in prevention, hoping to figure out a way to one day prevent breast cancer from developing.

"I don't think people realize it's not just one breast cancer, it's several types of breast cancer," explained Lelievre.

One woman diagnosed with breast cancer may not have the same type of breast cancer as another patient. Basically, that means it will be very difficult to find a one-size-fits-all cure and why Lelievre believes prevention is the what we need to focus on.

"There are a lot of exciting things happening in terms of, people thinking in terms of prevention," she said.

Unity Healthcare oncologist Glen Papioannou, MD, doesn't believe we'll find a cure in our lifetime.

"It's possible but I think it is unlikely," said Dr. Papioannou.

Dr. Papioannou does believe, however, we could be just decades away from treating breast cancer as a chronic condition.

"Even if we cannot cure the cancer, we can control it to where the patient does not die of it but they keep kind of going on and on and on," he explained.

How they'll be able to keep going on and on will be through the development of new treatments. Research put into action leads to more options for patients.

For example, it took lots of research to develop MammoSite Targeted Radiation. This treatment is available to certain breast cancer patients at IU Health Arnett Cancer Services.

Medical Physicist Douglas Fry, MD, explains how radiation is delivered to patients who've undergone a lumpectomy.

"The applicator resides within the woman's breast," he demonstrated. "It's very flexible, very soft and very tolerated by patients."

Fry said this localized radiation can increase disease-free survival and a better quality of life for the patient. Treatments are twice daily for five days and from walking in the door to walking out, it takes about 20 minutes, that's it.

"A woman over 50 with unifocal disease who is a candidate for a lumpectomy, is probably a candidate for partial breast radiation as well," said Dr. Fry.

The bottom line: Even if we don't see a cure the way most of us envision, one day soon it may be possible for breast cancer to no longer be a "terminal" disease.

That's great news for those battling the disease and those at risk. Making it a reality could be thanks to the work being done right now at Purdue University by scientists like Lelievre and her colleagues.

Distinct developmental patterns identified in children with autism during their first three years

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? In the largest prospective study to date of children with early and later manifestation of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) compared to children without ASD, researchers found two distinct patterns of language, social and motor development in the children with ASD. Published in the journal Child Development, the study found that early in development, children who display early signs of ASD show greater initial delay across multiple aspects of development compared to children whose ASD symptoms emerge later. However at 36 months of age, the early differences between these groups are no longer obvious. By the third birthday, the level of impairment between these symptom onset groups of children with ASD is comparable. Additionally, researchers uncovered a preclinical phase of ASD in which the signs of delay are not easily detected with existing clinical tests.

Previous research by Kennedy Krieger Institute researchers found that approximately half of all children with ASD can be diagnosed around the first birthday, while the remaining half do not show diagnostic indicators until later. The current study builds upon these findings by further evaluating motor and language development in a wider age span of children diagnosed with ASD (6 to 36 months), and examining how development unfolds differently in each group.

"Regardless of diagnosis, the development of children with and without ASD appears similar at six months of age on clinical tests," says Dr. Rebecca Landa, lead author and director of Kennedy Krieger's Center for Autism and Related Disorders. "However, for those children who went on to develop autism, the earliest signs of atypical development were non-specific to autism, such as general communication or motor delay."

About the Study

Participants included 204 infant siblings of children with ASD, who are at a higher genetic risk for developing ASD, and 31 infants with no family history of ASD. The infants were examined at 6, 14, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months of age. Confirmation of ASD classification was made at the 30 or 36 month visit for all participants because diagnosis at this age is considered definitive. At each visit, researchers evaluated the infants for motor, language, communication, social-affective and symbolic abilities, as well as typical symptoms of ASD.

Based on gold standard ASD assessments, infants were divided into three groups: Early-ASD, Later-ASD and Non-ASD. Both ASD groups (54 infants total) were confirmed to have ASD at 36 months; however the Early-ASD group (28 infants) received a clinical judgment of ASD symptomology at 14 months, whereas the Later-ASD group (26 infants) did not. The Non-ASD group (181 infants) did not meet outcome criteria for ASD.

Developmental Patterns

Early-ASD versus Later-ASD

? By 14 months, the Early-ASD group exhibited significantly lower expressive language and shared social smiling scores than the Later-ASD group.

? By 18 months, the Early-ASD group exhibited greater delays in receptive and expressive language development compared to the Later-ASD group.

? At 24 months, this gap between the Early- and Later-ASD groups had closed due to increasing impairment in the later-ASD group.

? At 30 and 36 months, there were no detectable differences between the Early- and Later-ASD groups.

Early-ASD versus Non-ASD groups

? At 6 months, the Early-ASD and Non-ASD groups exhibited comparable development.

? At 14 months, the Early-ASD group diverged from Non-ASD development in all measured aspects of development, except for fine motor functioning.

? These differences were sustained through 36 months.

Later-ASD versus Non-ASD groups

? At 6 months, the Later-ASD and Non-ASD groups exhibited comparable development.

? At 14 months, the Later-ASD group's scores were significantly lower than the Non-ASD group's for fine motor and some language skills.

? At 24 and 36 months, the Later-ASD group performed below the Non-ASD group on all abilities examined except fine motor functioning at 24 months.

Dr. Landa noted that patterns of slowing, plateauing and decline in development in children with ASD occurred within the timeframe when parents report first concerns about children with ASD. The subtlety of early signs and a gradual shift from typical development may not be detected by ASD screeners or by health professionals in a brief office visit. Thus, parent's expression of concern about their toddler's development or behavior requires careful consideration.

"If parents aren't seeing their children steadily develop new skills, they should talk to their pediatrician or contact their local early intervention program," says Dr. Landa. "Results from this study show that communication delays are often present in the second year of life in children with autism, especially involving language comprehension."

Further research is needed with a larger population of children with ASD and using behavioral and biological measures that may detect more subtle indicators of disrupted development in children with ASD in the first year of life. With larger studies, researchers can conduct more detailed analyses of developmental advances in children with ASD, which may facilitate the development of better early ASD screening tools and thereby improving access to earlier intervention. Studies have shown that early intervention improves language, social and cognitive outcomes for children with ASD.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institutes of Health, and Autism Speaks.

How-to: Picking a Window Manager in Linux

Picking a Window Manager

When using Linux, or just about any open source operating system out there for that matter, there's a proverbial Santa's knapsack of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) available. When you boil this topic down on the basic level, you've got two choices: Use a fully featured Desktop Environment (DE) with tons of bells and whistles, or alternatively you can use a slimmed-down and streamlined Window Manager (WM). We're going to get you up to speed on what each of these actually are, some reasons why you'd want to choose a WM over a DE, as well as some of the options you have among the Window Managers out there. Catch us after the break to join the age-old battle of choosing your GUI.

?If more of us valued food and cheer above hoarded gold, it would be a much merrier world.? ~?J.R.R. Tolkien.?27th?October 2012 Saturday, quite afternoon, beautiful place, passionate?bloggers and a ?perfect set up for a cheerful?evening?filled with good food and fun. The grand event is organized by Indi Blogger at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai, India.

?Mom do you know about Chola dynasty?? My son asked me when I was getting ready for the meet. ?The dynasty was one of the longest ruling dynasties in Southern India during 13th century and it has gifted India some of the best bronze and stone sculptures? he stated as a matter of fact. These are times I feel I had read my?history?lessons?thoroughly :) ?Anyways, these pointers were enough for me to appreciate the architect and?designs of the property.

The meet started at 2 PM with a small preview session, blogger introduction, some games?accompanied?with good refreshments?after?which we were?grouped?into batches and taken for a virtual tour of the ITC Chola property.?I soon found myself lost in the medieval period with the silence echoing from the intricately designed marbled walls and the colossal Atrium as I walked through.

The whole bunch of bloggers standing tall.

After shooting most of my pictures in natural light with macro frames I was feeling lost trying to click large?structures?in artificial and very dim lights. I almost gave up hopes after I saw the first 20 pictures were nothing but just a few bright dots of light, till a friend asked me to?change?a few settings on my camera.

Moreover it was quite difficult to take pictures following my group which was moving quickly from one wing to another while listening to the appointed?guide.

(This blog post is not a restaurant review or any kind of paid article).

I spent most of my time clicking around the food and the artifacts. Below are a few pictures I clicked as I perceived the structure through the?eyes?of art and food.

Its?close?to eight in night, I took almost 10 shots of this place with?maximum?ISO and found nothing in the frame but a few bright spots. Got upset, sat down trying to find out a way and finally clicked this shot from the steps.

I could not resist myself and asked the cute barperson to make a quick moctail I could make at my home.??He asked my favorite flavors, shake-shake and two quick pineapple and orange mocktails were ready before I could set my camera to click.

Mocktails are a wonderful way to pep up a party or serve during any festive?occasion. Mocktails are non-alcoholic?beverages?normally?made with fizzy soda water and fresh or canned?fruit?juices. You can easily adapt these recipes to suit your palate by adding ingredients you like.

Orange Punch

Ingredients;
(3 servings)

  • 1 cups Orange juice
  • 1 cup Pineapple juice
  • 1 cup soda/Sprite
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • A dash of grenadine (optional)
  • Ice cubes as required

Method; Add all the ingredients except the soda water or any colorless fizzy?drink?(sprite/7 up) fizzy in a cocktail shaker or?blender?and ? shake or blend for a few minutes.

Pour 3/4 of this fruity concoction in a chilled serving glass, fill the rest with the fizzy drink?and add the grenadine (if using in the recipe, Grenadine is a syrup which gives?reddish?or pink color to the drink).?Garnish with lemon wedge or orange segment and serve chilled.

me framed?

I was enthralled by the extensive use of marble and bronze metal, large pillar free hall, majestic lobbies, gorgeous chandeliers, ?subtle paintings and the architect most of which are ?inspired from Chola period. True to its name the property is built to relive the grandeur of a golden era in Indian history.

An evening worth spent, meeting old friends, greeting new bloggers and I?returned?home with these golden words of Mahatma Gandhi echoing in my mind ?Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.??
