Cleveland Rocks

I?ve been traveling for work this week, and have spent the last two and a half days in Cleveland, Ohio. It was my first visit, and it offered me a chance to do the things I love most: talk to people, see places through the eyes of others, and discover new things all on my own. I didn?t have a lot of time, but I managed to learn a little bit about the places near my hotel. And while people were admittedly a little taken aback when the stranger sharing the bus shelter (it started to pour and the rain was freezing) started asking questions, they opened up and shared what they knew.

It reminded me of something very important: civic pride should never be underestimated. Every place has a story to tell. Every place is loved. When people settle somewhere and the place becomes steeped with their life stories and informs their collective histories, it has the power to woo you?if you?re willing to listen.

Here?s a look at Cleveland through my eyes:

Built in 1890, The Arcade is a Victorian structure that was also home to America's first indoor mall.

The Free Stamp was created by Danish artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen. It was commissioned by Standard Oil Company of Ohio in 1982, and represented a common office supply at the time--a stamp.

Lake Erie is freezing. Literally.

Special exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center included the mummified remains of a female from 220 BC

For more on these places, see the full album on the AiP Facebook page. And please, when you travel, no matter where, no matter the reason, don?t be afraid to ask questions and allow yourself to see what makes that place home to others.

Father of Newtown victim: Ban assault weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Battling tears, the father of one of the first-graders slain at the December elementary school massacre in Connecticut pleaded with senators on Wednesday to ban assault weapons like the gun that killed his 6-year-old son.

"I'm not here for sympathy," Neil Heslin, a 50-year-old construction worker who said he grew up with guns and had been teaching his son, Jesse, about them. "I'm here because of my son."

Heslin spoke for 11 minutes, his voice barely audible and breaking at times, to the Senate Judiciary Committee that is deeply divided over the issue of curbing guns.

The panel was holding a hearing on a bill by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to ban assault weapons and ammunition magazines that can carry more than 10 rounds. Feinstein and her allies said her measure would reduce the deaths such high-powered firearms can cause, but Republicans on the panel said the move would violate the constitutional right to bear arms and take guns away from law-abiding citizens who use them for self-defense.

Heslin said he supports sportsmen and the Second Amendment right for citizens to have firearms. But he said that amendment was written centuries before weapons as deadly as assault weapons were invented.

"No person should have to go through what myself" and other victims' families have had to endure, Heslin told the lawmakers.

He recalled the morning of Dec. 14, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza used a Bushmaster assault weapon to kill 20 first-graders and six staffers at the Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

"He said it's all going to be OK," Heslin said his son told him when he dropped him off at school. He added, "And it wasn't OK."

Despite Newtown and other mass shootings, the bruising, difficult path through Congress that gun control legislation faces was underscored Wednesday when the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said he opposes universal background checks for gun purchases, a central piece of President Barack Obama's plan for curbing gun violence. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., told reporters that the proposal could lead to creation of a federal gun registry ? which the Obama administration has said will not happen.

Wednesday's Senate Judiciary hearing was its third since the Newtown tragedy made gun violence a top-tier national issue. The Judiciary panel could begin writing legislation as early as Thursday, but that session is likely to be delayed until next week.

Numerous relatives and neighbors of victims of Newtown, as well as other shootings at Aurora, Colo., and Virginia Tech filled the large hearing room.

At one point, Feinstein played a video showing how a bump fire slide, a piece of equipment added to an assault weapon, allows it to rapidly fire many rounds of ammunition, much as a machine gun would.

"The need for a federal ban has never been greater," Feinstein said.

The panel's top Republican, Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, expressed sympathy for gun violence victim, but said existing gun laws are not being adequately enforced, including background checks designed to prevent criminals from getting weapons.

"We should be skeptical about giving the Justice Department more laws to enforce" when it's not enforcing current ones, Grassley said.

Grassley said he believed Congress will eventually take action on boosting penalties for illegally trafficking guns, on more adequately keeping guns from people with mental problems, and encouraging states do a better job of reporting mental health records of potential gun buyers to the federal background check system.

At one point, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., used his questioning of Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn to argue that the current background check system is not being well enforced, since only a handful of the roughly 80,000 people annually who fail those checks are prosecuted for filing documents saying they qualify to own the weapons.

Uncharacteristically for a Senate hearing, Flynn interrupted the senator, saying, "I want to stop 76,000 people from buying guns illegally," a reference to the gun purchases that the background check system blocked last year. "That's what background check does."

His remark drew applause from spectators in the room.

Across the Capitol, the House Education and Workforce Committee planned to hear from school safety experts and counselors about how to keep students safe.

"How can we be confident that something like this does not happen again?" asked John Kline, R-Minn., the Republican panel's chairman as the meeting began.

His Democratic counterpart, Rep. George Miller of California, said school safety is linked to firearms.

"Sandy Hook is an event that calls us on us as policymakers to do something. ... A school must be a place where children feel secure," Miller said. "Turning schools into armed fortresses is not the answer."

Instead, he said schools need to add counseling services and mental health programs.

In their prepared testimony, witnesses there were careful not to endorse the NRA's suggestion that armed volunteers in schools were a realistic answer to prevent future attacks.

"I cannot emphasize enough how critical it is for officers to be properly selected and properly trained to function in the school environment," said Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers.

Despite the raw emotion, Feinstein's effort to ban assault weapons is expected to fall short due to opposition by the National Rifle Association and many Republicans, plus wariness by moderate Democrats.

Feinstein's bill has attracted 21 co-sponsors, all Democrats. Including herself, it is sponsored by eight of the 10 Judiciary panel Democrats ? precarious for a committee where Democrats outnumber Republicans 10-8. Democrats on the panel who haven't co-sponsored the measure include the chairman, Pat Leahy of Vermont, who said Monday he hadn't seen the bill.

Obama made bans on assault weapons and large capacity magazines key parts of the gun curbs he proposed in January in response to the Connecticut school massacre.

The cornerstone of his package is a call for universal background checks for gun buyers, some version of which seems to have a stronger chance of moving through Congress. Currently, only sales by federally licensed gun dealers require such checks, which are designed to prevent criminals and others from obtaining firearms.

Feinstein's bill would ban future sales of assault weapons and magazines carrying more than 10 rounds of ammunition but exempt those that already exist. It would bar sales, manufacturing and imports of semiautomatic rifles and pistols that can use detachable magazines and have threaded barrels or other military features. The measure specifically bans 157 firearms but excludes 2,258 others in an effort to avoid barring hunting and sporting weapons.

Feinstein, who helped create a 1994 assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, and other supporters cite studies showing use of the firearms in crimes diminished while the prohibition lasted. A 2004 report said the proportion of gun crimes involving assault weapons dropped by up to 72 percent in five cities studied.

Opponents cite data from that same study showing assault weapons were used in only 2 percent to 8 percent of gun crimes, arguing that a ban would have little impact. The study also estimated there were 1.5 million assault weapons owned privately in the U.S. in 1994, and an estimated 30 million high-capacity magazines as of 1999, which critics say means exempting them would diminish a ban's effect

Calif. female lawmakers condemn Oscar host

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Two female California state lawmakers have condemned Oscar host Seth MacFarlane's comments during Sunday's awards presentation as degrading toward women and asked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to use better judgment in the future.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal and Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, both Democrats who lead the Legislature's women's caucus, sent a letter to Academy President Hawk Koch on Tuesday, requesting that the organization disavow MacFarlane's behavior.

They objected to the comedian's focus on the physical appearance of several actresses and quips about nude scenes.

"Furthermore, there was a disturbing theme about violence against women being acceptable and funny," the lawmakers wrote. "From topical jabs about domestic violence to singing about 'boobs' during a film's rape scene, Seth MacFarlane crossed the line from humor to misogyny."

MacFarlane's performance has drawn multiple critics since Sunday's show. Blogs compiled highlights of his punch lines, which included a song that referenced leading ladies who have bared their breasts on film that were accompanied by reaction shots from those actresses.

He also made light of a domestic violence incident between rapper Chris Brown and singer Rihanna, and joked about the heavy accents of several Latina actresses.

"On Oscar night, when Hollywood seeks to honor its best, Seth MacFarlane's monologue reduced our finest female actresses to caricatures and stereotypes, degrading women as a whole and the filmmaking industry itself," the letter stated.

Lowenthal and Jackson, both Democrats, asked Koch to respond. Academy spokeswoman Toni Thompson had no immediate comment.

In their letter, the lawmakers noted the Violence Against Women Act currently under debate in Congress and a resolution that the Legislature passed supporting the act's reauthorization. Better judgment is needed in the academy's future decisions regarding its awards show hosts and their material, they said.

"This should be a celebration of artists in the filmmaking industry, not an offensive display of disrespect toward women that sets the fight for gender equality, dignity, and respect back decades," they wrote.

A repeat hosting performance by MacFarlane doesn't look likely. Asked Tuesday on Twitter if he would host the Oscars again, he replied, "No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though."

Israel: Mortar shell from Syria lands in Golan

Israeli military officials say a mortar shell fired from Syria has landed in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.

The officials say the shell landed in an open area near an Israeli village that is close to the Syrian frontier. No one was hurt. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity under military policy.

The officials say it's still not clear who fired the shell and whether it was aimed at Israel or was stray fire from the civil war in neighboring Syria.

In recent months, stray fire from the fighting in Syria has landed in Israeli-controlled territory. On several occasions, Israel has returned fire. Israel did not respond to Thursday's shelling.

Israeli military officials fear the fighting in Syria could spill over into Israel.

Military draft registration: Goodbye to the draft board?

A new proposal would eliminate military draft registration, doubling down on the military's commitment to an all-volunteer army. Men ages 18 to 25 would no longer need to register for the draft.

By Associated Press / February 25, 2013

Then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta hands the memorandum he has just signed, ending the 1994 ban on women serving in combat, to Army Lt. Col. Tamatha Patterson of Huntingdon, Tenn., during a press briefing at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.

Cliff Owen/AP/File

In the wake of the Pentagon's recent announcement that women will serve in combat roles and combat zones, the question arose: Will women need to register for the draft? That may become moot: Two lawmakers are waging a little-noticed campaign to abolish the Selective Service System, the independent federal agency that manages?draft?registration.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

If the proposed law moves forward, no one would have to register for the draft anymore, male or female.

Reps. Peter DeFazio (D) of Oregon and Rep. Mike Coffman (R) of Colorado say the millions of dollars the agency spends each year preparing for the possibility of a?military?draft?is a waste of money. They say the Pentagon has no interest in returning to conscription due to the success of the all-volunteer force.

Here's a quick look at the Selective Service System:

? The Selective Service has a budget of $24 million and a full-time staff of 130. It maintains a database of about 17 million potential male draftees. In the event of a?draft, the agency would mobilize as many as 11,000 volunteers to serve on local?draft?boards that would decide if exemptions or deferments to?military?service were warranted.

The Selective Service is an "inexpensive insurance policy," said Lawrence Romo, the agency's director. "We are the true backup for the true emergency."

? Men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register and can do so online or by mail. Those who fail to register with the Selective Service can be charged with a felony. The Justice Department hasn't prosecuted anyone for that offense since 1986.

? There can be other consequences, though. Failing to register can mean the loss of financial aid for college, being refused employment with the federal government, and denied U.S. citizenship.

DeFazio says it makes no sense to threaten to penalize men who don't register when the odds of a?draft?are so remote.

Past attempts to get rid of the agency have failed, DeFazio says, because too many of his colleagues on Capitol Hill worry that closing Selective Service down will make them look weak on national security.

"There is no one who wants this except 'chicken hawk' members of Congress," DeFazio says, using a term to describe a person who pushes for the use of?military?power but never served in the armed forces.

Cell discovery could hold key to causes of inherited diseases

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Fresh insights into the protective seal that surrounds the DNA of our cells could help develop treatments for inherited muscle, brain, bone and skin disorders.

Researchers have discovered that the proteins within this coating -- known as the nuclear envelope -- vary greatly between cells in different organs of the body.

This variation means that certain disease causing proteins will interact with the proteins in the protective seal to cause illness in some organs, but not others.

Until now scientists had thought that all proteins within the nuclear envelope were the same in every type of organ.

In particular the finding may provide insights into a rare muscle disease, Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy.

This condition causes muscle wastage and heart problems, affects only muscles, even though it is caused by a defect in a nuclear envelope protein found in every cell in the body.

Scientists say that the envelope proteins they have identified as being specific to muscle may interact with the defective nuclear envelope protein that causes Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, to give rise to the disease.

In a similar way, this may help to explain other heritable diseases that only affect certain parts of the body despite the defective proteins being present in every cell. The study also identified nuclear envelope proteins specific to liver and blood.

Some of these also interact with proteins in all cells that are responsible for other nuclear envelope diseases, ranging from brain and fat to skin diseases, and so may help explain why things go wrong.

Dr Eric Schirmer, of the University of Edinburgh's Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology, who led the study, said: "Nobody could have imagined what we found. The fact that most proteins in the nuclear envelope would be specific for certain tissue types is a very exciting development. This may finally enable us to understand this ever-growing spectrum of inherited diseases as well as new aspects of tissue-specific gene regulation."

The findings build on previous research that showed proteins in the nuclear envelope are linked to more than 20 heritable diseases.

The study, which was supported by the Wellcome Trust and conducted in collaboration with the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, is published in the journal Nucleus.

Clear promises Leap Motion support in Mac app, offers a glimpse of what's to come

We've seen some big Leap Motion deals announced, and some fairly impressive demos, but we haven't yet heard of many big-name apps that will support the gesture control technology. While not the biggest around, Realmac has today confirmed that the Mac version of its Clear to-do app -- itself noted for its novel interface -- will indeed support the motion controller "later this year." Details are light beyond that, but the company's offered a peek at what you can expect in the brief video after the break.

Qatar poet remains in prison for 'offensive' verse

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? An appeals court in Qatar has reduced the sentence of a jailed poet from a life term to 15 years for a verse considered offensive to the Gulf nation's ruler.

Despite the reduction, poet Muhammad ibn al-Dheeb al-Ajami denounced Qatar's judicial system in a court session on Monday held under heavy security.

The case has brought international appeals by rights groups and is part of widening crackdowns by Gulf Arab nations against free expression, including sentences for social media posts deemed insulting to leaders.

Al-Ajami was given a life sentence in January for a verse posted online in 2010 that spoke about the traits needed to be a good leader. He also wrote a poem in 2011 that lauded the Arab Spring rebellions and criticized Arab governments that restrict freedoms.

Indonesia: finance minister faces hurdles over nomination to central ...

Agus Martowardojo

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has set the cat among the pigeons with a surprise choice of nominee as central bank governor to succeed Darmin Nasution, whose term ends in May.

The rupiah has barely moved since Saturday?s news that the president had plumped for finance minister Agus Martowardojo (pictured left). But his record has been questioned by some members of parliament, which will have the final say on the appointment. Prepare for rumbles, with politicians increasingly focusing on the 2014 presidential election.

Parliament has form: even though the Indonesian president has plenty of clout, MPs rejected Martowardojo?s candidacy for the central bank in 2008, and could do so again.

Yudhoyono may simply be clearing the decks in advance of the polls ? and shunting aside a finance minister who has irritated some ruling party supporters by his drive for fiscal discipline.

Sri Mulyani Indrawati, his corruption-fighting predecessor, faced similar battles and was also forced out.

Martowardojo, 57, is a veteran banker who previously ran Bank Mandiri, Indonesia?s largest lender. But he lacks the economic credentials of the 64-year-old Darmin, who has a PhD from the Sorbonne. MPs in 2008 refused to accept Martowardojo because of his lack of monetary policy experience ? and it?s easy to see how the same arguments could be used again.

Some MPs now say that the country?s worsening fiscal pressures should also count against the finance minister. The fiscal deficit widened to 1.8 per cent of GDP in 2012 from 1.1 per cent. The rupiah was last year the weakest of Asia?s bigger emerging market currencies.

Finally, there are opposition parliamentarians who claim that Martowardojo is tainted by financial scandal. Dolfie Ofp, an opposition member of the finance committee, was quoted by Reuters as saying: ?For the BI governor nomination, we don?t only look at technical capability. We also look at integrity and national interest. Agus Martowardojo?s involvement in the Hambalang (graft) case makes us doubt his integrity.?

Dolfie was referring to a corruption scandal surrounding the construction of the Hambalang sports complex, which at the weekend saw the resignation of the sports minister and of the chairman of Yudhoyono?s ruling Democratic Party. Martowardojo was questioned last week by Indonesia?s anti-corruption agency as a witness in relation to the affair. He denied any responsibility for the spending decisions at the centre of the scandal.

Meanwhile, Harry Azhar Azis, vice chairman of the finance committee, has given less than his full support for Martowardoj. He was quoted by Bloomberg as saying: ?We realise that the previous finance committee rejected Martowardojo?s candidacy for Bank Indonesia Governor. This time it will depend on the fit-and-proper test.?

But, it could well be that politicians are more interested in picking holes in the candidacy than investors. As Standard Chartered Bank said in a note, the finance minister is known for his fiscal conservatism ? and has sometimes gone out on a limb to defend his position:

He has repeatedly proposed a sharp hike in subsidised fuel prices (often differing with Yudhoyono on the issue) in order to reduce government spending on energy subsidies, increase fiscal flexibility, and ensure that the fiscal deficit remains below the statutory 3% of GDP. Under his leadership at the Ministry of Finance, Moody?s and Fitch upgraded Indonesia to investment grade, praising Indonesia?s fiscal prudence against the global backdrop of fiscal crises in Europe and the US.

What will really matter to investors is fiscal policy in the run-up to elections. They will want to know that, if Martowordojo gets the governor?s job, his successor will resist political pressures for pre-poll splurging.

Standard Chartered says:

We do not expect changes in the BI governor and finance minister posts to disrupt Indonesia?s economy, as both institutions have solid bureaucracies that can continue to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.

That?s true. But politicians fighting elections have only one priority.

Mendeley Desktop (for Mac)

Whether you are looking to build a repository for a major research project or simply hoping to organize journal articles, Mendeley (Free) offers an elegant solution to document management. With 1GB of free cloud-based storage (upgradable to two for $5 per month, 5GB for $10, or unlimited for $15), cross-platform compatibility, and iOS apps, you will always have access to your Mendeley library, but, thanks to web browser and Microsoft Word plugins, you will not feel tethered to it. Mendeley pairs nicely with browser-based research manager Zotero 3. Now entering its seventh year of development, Zotero handles documents with greater ?lan; however, many scholars, educators, and students?especially those in the sciences?may find they prefer Mendeley for its collaboration options.

Accommodating Research
After I finished reviewing Zotero, I committed myself to the browser-based research assistant. It was a big step for me. I upgraded my account from the standard storage (a paltry 300 megabytes) to a premium plan (two-gigabytes for $20 annually), and even made Firefox (free, 4 stars) my default web browser. It all happened so fast. Needless to say, when I heard about Mendeley, I was curious, but skeptical. Certainly, I had heard good things about its academic social network, but would I have to start over? And, if not, how much trouble would it be to integrate Mendeley into my workflow?

Mendeley makes promiscuous research awfully enticing. In fact, I was prompted to sync my Zotero library upon launching the application. The word sync, not import, is a crucial distinction: Because Mendeley synchronizes with my Zotero, I can add books and articles to Zotero and they automatically appear in Mendeley. (the inverse, however, is not true). Mendeley can also watch a folder for new documents (e.g. a Downloads folder).

Although Mendeley was quick to recognize all of the files in my 350-megabyte Zotero library, synchronization with Mendeley?s cloud-based storage was another story. It took three attempts to complete synchronization. This would be less of an issue if synchronization did not prevent sharing or accessing shared folders. Instead, my testing was put on hold until I had synchronized my entire library with Mendeley?s cloud. Fortunately, the cloud is voluminous for a free service: A gigabyte of online storage goes a long way with PDFs and Word documents.

Local, Public, and Private Folders
Mendeley reproduced my Zotero folder hierarchy. I added folders within folders to see if the software would scale to the demands of a larger research project. While the applications lags more than it ought to (I test on a two-year-old MacBook Pro), I have no complaints about the elegant user interface. Adding new documents is as simple as dragging onto folders. Mendeley captures metadata from PDFs and accepts notes, tags, and keywords?all searchable.

Mendeley offers two kinds of groups: public (ideal for reading lists) and private (perfect for sharing sources, references, or drafts of living projects). For free, Mendeley allows one of each?otherwise you need what Mendeley calls a ?Team Plan? ($49 per month). This may sound stingy, but do not forget the voluminous online storage (a gigabyte) and baroque folder hierarchies. Because public groups only support metadata, they use next to no storage. Collaborators can still proffer sources and add notes. Given the public availability, perhaps I will solicit other feedback in the future. Unfortunately, for those in the humanities, Mendeley is a science-centric ecosystem. (A search for ?American literature? produced one direct match, ?Early American Literature,? with just seven members and 19 papers).

I preferred private group sharing. I invited several colleagues (via email) without leaving the application. Although basic metadata is available through the Mendeley website, advanced features, such as previewing and annotating documents, requires Mendeley Desktop. Although my collaborators complained about having to install a dedicated application, they quickly praised the tabbed interface, through which they could mark up multiple documents in the same window. All edits automatically save to the local library; however, we quickly learned that you must manually click the ?Sync? button for changes to take effect.

Fit to be tied: The Oscar goes to you ... and you!

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Sunday night's Oscar pool tallies got complicated with the announcement of the sound editing category winners: There was a tie.

"No BS," said presenter Mark Wahlberg, with a grin. Wahlberg wasn't fazed, though, reading the award for "Zero Dark Thirty" first, letting those filmmakers accept their trophy, and then returning to the podium to announce that the second honor went to "Skyfall."

Ties are not unheard of at the Oscars, but they're extremely rare. In 1968, Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand each received 3,030 votes as best actress. It was the first time a principal Oscar category had been divided perfectly.

In 1932, Fredric March and Wallace Beery split the best actor award, even though Beery had one more vote than March. The Oscar rules at the time said that a solo winner could only be declared if an individual earned three more votes than the runner-up, according to History.com.?

Today, dual awards are only awarded for exact vote number matches.

One other memorable Oscar tie was for best documentary: In 1986, "Artie Shaw: Time Is All You've Got" and "Down and Out in America" shared the prize.

Lawmakers urge Facebook to remove fraudulent Sandy Hook tributes

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Three Connecticut lawmakers on Monday urged Facebook Inc to remove fraudulent and abusive tribute pages related to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

In the months since 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 26 students and teachers in Newtown, Connecticut, the world's No. 1 social network has been host to an outpouring of genuine online tributes - as well as a hotbed of fraud. In December, a New York City woman was arrested for allegedly posing as the relative of a shooting victim on Facebook and swindling donors.

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, as well as Rep. Elizabeth Esty, wrote to Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg in a joint letter, pressed the company to stamp out pages that "violate the privacy of families as they grieve, or seek financial gain through soliciting donations under false pretenses, or generating Facebook 'likes' for marketing purposes."

Facebook, in a statement, said it had devised a new process with dedicated staff to respond to user complaints related to Sandy Hook, in the wake of the December shooting.

"For the past few months, our rapid response team has acted swiftly to remove inappropriate materials flagged by the foundation and the families," Facebook said. "We will continue to be vigilant."

Iran Drone Capture Denied By Revolutionary Guard

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard is denying that it captured a foreign unmanned aircraft during a military exercise in southern Iran.

A spokesman for the Guard, Yasin Hasanali, told The Associated Press that the drone was actually being used during the drill as a supposed enemy aircraft.

Iranian media on Saturday quoted a spokesman for the Guard as saying that its electronic warfare unit had taken control of a foreign drone's navigation system and forced it to land during the site of the military exercise.

Iran has claimed to have captured several U.S. drones, including an advanced RQ-170 Sentinel CIA spy drone in December 2011 and at least three ScanEagle aircraft.

The Guard's military exercise, code-named Great Prophet-8, ends on Monday.

Product Reviews These types of Mobile Communications Package cords break far too easily. I have possessed 3 in the past year. They split at the connection for that phone as well as where these people plug into the headphones. It is effective before it breaks or cracks but come on Bose, with regard to $40 can?t you make a good cord? Love the headphones, By the way.

Comments: I love my Cellular Communications Kit because it enables me to make use of my noise rescheduling headphones for calls. I work at home and this is the best headset choice I have found to make sure each side of the call tend to be heard clearly. Nevertheless, after 18 months useful the connection on the wire has just broken for me personally too! Te'o doesn't duck NFL media blitz

?

INDIANAPOLIS - The circus organs had finally stopped piping and the media tidal wave had receded.

An hour had passed Saturday since Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o walked off Podium C at the NFL scouting combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. And now Gil Brandt stood in a concourse trying to summarize the weekend's most anticipated interview.

Te'o had been under the spotlight for 14 minutes and 36 seconds, fielding 34 questions and trying to provide an honest if totally abbreviated update on his oh-so-peculiar 2013.

Brandt, once the vice president of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys and now a senior analyst for the NFL's website, shrugged and gave a preliminary nod of approval.

"Handled himself incredibly well," Brandt said.

Pointed questions were fired Te'o's way about the now-infamous Lennay Kekua fake girlfriend hoax. Yet he navigated the session with grace.

His answers were direct. His sentiments seemed sincere.

"Once you do this head on," Brandt said, "hopefully you get it behind you and it's history. And before long, this can be about him as a football player again."

?????

A night earlier, as hundreds of combine participants were being fed at the nearby Crowne Plaza, Brandt made a point to seek out Te'o. He wanted to measure the linebacker's anxiety, to get a feel for his mindset, to offer a nuggets of advice.

Brandt sat with Te'o as he ate and told him it would be in his best interest to attack all the athletic testing and drills at the combine without reservation. Te'o said he planned to.

Brandt advised Te'o not to dodge the media.

Te'o never intended to.

"I'm like everybody else," Brandt said. "I want to know what the kid is made of. And I've been really impressed. He has great communication skills. He interacts so well."

So when it finally came time for Te'o to march into the teeth of an unprecedented combine media blitz, he climbed the podium steps and looked out at a swarm unlike any he'd seen.

"Pretty crazy," he said. "I've been in front of a few cameras. But never as many as this."

Not only had all 32 chairs set up in front of the podium been full for some time, but 43 TV cameras had also jockeyed for position, with another eye-opening overflow of reporters lined eight and nine bodies deep across the room, some climbing on top of chairs to get a view.

By most accounts, the interest dwarfed even that of Tim Tebow's 2010 appearance here.

Te'o was asked why he had been slow in speaking up after the story broke on the website Deadspin on Jan.?16 with bizarre revelations that his late girlfriend had not only never died of leukemia but wasn't a girl at all -- rather a social media creation by hoax perpetrator Ronaiah Tuiasosopo.

"It was just a whirlwind of stuff," Te'o explained. "For me, a 22-year-old, a 21-year-old at that time, you're just trying to get your thoughts right. Everything's kind of chaos for a little bit. So you let that chaos die down and wait until everybody's willing to listen."

For the past 5 1/2 weeks, Te'o admitted, he has found himself fighting past humiliation.

"You're walking through a grocery store," he said, "and you kind of give people double-takes to see if they're staring at you. It's definitely embarrassing."

?????

Over 15 minutes, the linebacker's mellow deportment seemed to calm the fascination in his plight.

Consider that a Te'o victory, as minor as it may be. Still, the media crush provides another variable for NFL general managers to consider.

Even if teams can find comfort that Te'o has been truthful about the hoax, even if they're sold he can be a difference-maker, they will have to wonder whether the media swarm Te'o will attract will become a nuisance.

It's not only the linebacker who will have to get used to that crush. Fifty-two other teammates will have to deal with its annoyances. And ask the Jets if there was any fatigue related to the media swarm that Tebow's arrival brought last season.

The Vikings will be one of those teams doing an exhaustive evaluation on Te'o. With the draft's 23rd pick and needs at middle linebacker, GM Rick Spielman will measure his Te'o intrigue across the board.

Can the kid play? Can he fit within the defensive scheme? Will he be a match for the brand of tough, disciplined and unselfish players head coach Leslie Frazier wants?

Those assessments should be fairly easy to complete.

Then, the Vikings will dig deeper into Te'o's background and the complex scandal that engulfed him, creating layers of confusion that still haven't been cleared up.

Said Spielman: "We know some things that have not been reported in the media. I'll say that."

?????

In a new phase of this college-to-NFL transition, Te'o not only answered reporters' questions Saturday, he had private 15-minute interviews scheduled with 20 teams this weekend.

The linebacker will also try to provide additional answers Monday when he runs the 40-yard dash and goes through athletic testing.

And when those formalities are finished, the far more extensive interactions will ramp up.

The Vikings, for one, seem likely to schedule Te'o for a Winter Park visit. And they will look forward to compiling results of the psychological testing they will put Te'o through, an exercise they hope can provide a reliable profile of who he is.

"There are a lot of different areas we really hone in on and try to look at," Spielman said. "Coachability. Social maturity. Self-esteem. Mental quickness."

On Thursday, before the Vikings had their chance to meet with Te'o, Spielman had no gut feeling for how his feelings might change.

"I don't know," Spielman said. "Because I haven't talked to him. ... So I don't know what percentage [the hoax stuff] is going to play. It could be, we're fine with what happened. Or maybe it's like, 'Yeesh. I don't know.'

"To be honest with you, I don't understand [some of it]. But I'm not a social media savvy guy. I ask my kids sometimes, 'Can you actually have a girlfriend online? How does that work?' I'm pretty naive when it comes to that. But honestly, I can't answer that question until we get in front and speak with him. I'm sure we'll have numerous conversations beyond the combine."

As well as Te'o handled Saturday, he best remain prepared. The demands of the pre-draft process are far from behind him.

Issue One: The State of the Union

The jobs focus

President Barack Obama's State of the Union address held solid expectations for the nation's work force.

No city can identify more with the vision to be a "magnet for manufacturing" than Pittsburgh. Prolific opportunities exist with the Marcellus Shale and through growth in the energy and health care sectors. Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, in partnership with the business, philanthropic and education community, is preparing a work force for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

The president mentioned how Germany ensures a tie between the high school diploma and a technical degree from a college to make students ready for jobs. I recently visited Germany to learn firsthand how the country creates a pipeline of skilled workers, and we're now developing similar approaches through our Making It in America federal work force innovation grant program -- using labor union know-how to give people new skills to support domestic commercialization of innovative start-up manufacturers.

Three Rivers WIB also is rethinking the youth development system to ensure that we know the resources we invest in youth services are of high quality, highly effective and aligned with research-based youth development principles. We agree, "It's not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government." We encourage every youth to imagine a career and participate in a paid work experience.

The Pittsburgh region is adding jobs at great speed, "but none of it will matter unless we also equip our citizens with the skills and training to fill those jobs." Well said, Mr. President. That's where we come in.

Empty promises

Any reader who would take the time to parse the priorities of the State of the Union speech by the president outlined in your Feb. 14 editorial ("Second Act: Obama Lays Out an Ambitious Set of Priorities") would have no trouble seeing the duplicity of them. Many of the goals have been stated as promises by the president as a candidate and first-term president, only to be forgotten and ignored as the "same old, same old."

If the president could really show the leadership you claim at the end of the piece, he would be pragmatic and foster the bipartisanship he neglects to show. Perhaps he should finally stop campaigning and start governing.

Obama administration: Cuts to cause flight delays

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is warning that automatic spending cuts scheduled to take effect March 1 will result in travel delays at major airports and require traffic-disrupting shutdowns of air traffic control towers at smaller facilities.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the across the board reductions will require trimming $600 million this year form the Federal Aviation Administration. LaHood says that will mean furloughing air traffic controllers, which in turn will reduce the ability to guide planes in and out of airports.

He says travelers could experience 90 minute delays or more in major cities.

The transportation reductions are part of broader, cuts that will hit across government agencies that will begin to kick in at the end of next week.

LaHood's appearance in the White House briefing room was part of a continuing campaign by Cabinet members and other administration officials aimed at buttressing President Barack Obama's appeal to Congress to replace the cuts with tax increases and targeted reductions. Congressional Republicans oppose any additional tax increases.

Asked whether it appeared inevitable that the cuts would materialize, press secretary Jay Carney said: "We obviously are discouraged by the line that Republican leaders have taken, which is the book is closed on revenue. ... We remain hopeful and we will continue to engage with Congress."

LaHood, a former Republican congressman from Illinois, denied that he was simply describing a worst-case scenario that would scare the public and put pressure on Republican lawmakers. He said the effect of the cuts will begin to be felt around the beginning of April.

"What I'm trying to do is wake up members of the Congress with the idea that they need to come to the table so we don't have to have this kind of calamity in air services in America," he said.

LaHood said the main reason the White House had asked him to appear before White House-based reporters was because he is a Republican making the case for Obama with Republican lawmakers.
