BAGHDAD (AP) ? Back-to-back explosions tore through tents housing Shiite pilgrims in southern Iraq on Thursday, the deadliest in a wave of bombings that killed at least 43 people nationwide, officials said.
The attacks in Hillah began with a roadside bombing near tents set up for Shiites commemorating the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussein. That was quickly followed by a car bomb targeting emergency response teams.
The explosions, which occurred in a busy commercial area, killed at least 29 people and wounded as many as 90, a police officer said, making it the deadliest attack in the city this year.
Twisted and charred vehicles were left outside damaged stores as shopkeepers collected their strewn merchandise from the bloodstained pavement. Hillah is 95 kilometers (60 miles) south of Baghdad.
Ali Hussein, 44, was walking near his house when he heard the two thunderous explosions near the commercial area about 200 meters (yards) from his house.
"I rushed to the blast site and I saw burning cars and pieces of flesh everywhere," said Hussein, who owns a grocery store. "There were small blood pools all around the place," he added, blaming the security forces who "should do better in order to protect the innocent people."
Just hours earlier, a parked car exploded near the shrine of Imam Hussein in the Shiite city of Karbala, killing six people and wounding 20, another police officer said.
Karbala, 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of Baghdad, is one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam and the place where Imam Hussein and his brother, Imam Abbas, are buried. Hundreds of thousands of Shiites flock to their golden-domed shrines every year.
Such religious ceremonies have often been targeted by Sunni insurgents seeking to foment sectarian violence and undermine the Shiite-led government.
A suicide bomber also drove his explosives-laden car into a police checkpoint in the mainly Sunni city of Fallujah, 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of the capital, killing three policemen and wounding 11 others, a police official in the city said.
And in the northern city of Mosul, a parked car bomb went off as a police patrol passed, killing two people and wounded two, police said. Another police patrol was hit by a roadside bomb in the town of Balad Ruz, 70 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killing one policeman and wounding six others.
In other violence, a roadside bomb killed an Iraqi soldier and wounded five others in Taji, north of Baghdad, and a parked car bomb struck a restaurant in Madain, southeast of the capital, killing a civilian and wounding 12 others, according to police.
Five health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.
The nationwide death toll was the highest since Oct. 27 when 40 people were killed in a string of bombings and other attacks around the country.
Although violence has ebbed since the peak of insurgency several years ago, attacks are still frequent against security forces, government officials and civilians. No one claimed responsibility for Thursday's bombings, but car bombs, shootings and roadside devices are the hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon?s founder and CEO, took the stage at the company?s re: Invent developer conference for a wide-ranging discussion with the company?s CTO Werner Vogels about?Amazon?s web service and retail business, as well as his view about entrepreneurship and his personal projects, such as the 10,000 year clock and the Blue Origin space program.
Bezos On AWS
Amazon Web Services, Bezos argued, is similar to the company?s Kindle Device business in that ?we make money when people use the Kindle, not when they buy it.? AWS, too, is a pay-as-you-go service after all, and just like owners of an early Kindle can still use it to read books, AWS has helped businesses to get off the ?upgrade treadmill.? Most importantly, though, Amazon?s interests in both its retail and AWS business, have to be aligned with its customers,?he said.
Bezos also noted that he is often asked about what?s going to change in the next 10 years, but the more important questions, he thinks, are about what?s not going to change in the next 10 years. For the most part, you build a business around what?s stable. ?Retail customers,? he said, ?want cheap prices and fast delivery? and AWS customers want reliability and speed. ?The effort that we put into those things will continue to pay dividends in the long term. It?s impossible to imagine that people would say: I love AWS, but I wish it were a little less reliable.?
All of these big ideas, Bezos acknowledged, are often very obvious, but for many businesses, ?it?s hard to retain a firm grasp of what?s obvious over time.?
Bezos On Innovation
Asked about his thoughts about innovation, Bezos said that one of the most important factors that allow a company to stay innovative is to find the right employees ? the kind of people that want to improve things. Later on, as a company grows, you can take risks again. Founders, however, should never try to ?chase the hot thing. You?ll never catch the wave that way, but you have to position yourself so you can catch it.? Founders also have to be passionate about their ideas. ?I?d pick a missionary over a mercenary every day.?
Bezos On Customer Service
One of the most interesting anecdotes from the conversation was Bezos? account of a customer training session he participated in a few years ago. A smart company, in his view, manages to reduce waste wherever possible, and that often means preventing defects from moving downstream.
Bezos? trainer in this training session already knew that when a customer called the service center after buying a particular table, chances were that customer was going to return that table because they always arrived scratched. The customer service agents knew this, but had no way to relay this information to the rest of the company. Today, however, every Amazon service agent can pull a product of the website if there are problems.
In a low-margin business like Amazon?s, reducing this kind of waste is very important, but Bezos noted that ?it takes a certain point of view to do things this way.? The further downstream a problem moves, however, the harder and more expensive it becomes to fix.
?I sometimes have waking dreams that one day I may operate a high-margin business,? he said, but if you have high margins, ?it?s hard to be efficient ? because you don?t need to be.?
Clocks And Space Ships
Toward the end of the chat, Vogels also asked Bezos about two of his personal projects: the 10,000 Year Clock and his Blue Origin space venture. Bezos, for the most part, did not have anything new to announce here, but he did stress the engineering challenges of the clock project and argued that a reusable space ship like Blue Origin has a number of advantages over more traditional, fixed-wing shuttles that some of the project?s competitors are working on. Sadly, though, he also said that ?Amazon Prime shipping to Mars is still a ways out.?

NASA: Closest planet to sun, Mercury, harbors ice
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? A NASA spacecraft has confirmed there's ice at Mercury's north pole.
Scientists announced Thursday that the orbiting probe, Messenger, has found evidence of frozen water, even though Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. The ice is located in the permanently shadowed region of Mercury's north pole. It's thought to be at least one-and-a-half feet deep ? and possibly as much as 65 feet deep.
Scientists say it's likely Mercury's south pole also has ice, though there are no data to support it. Messenger orbits much closer to the north pole than the south.
Radar measurements, for years, have suggested the presence of ice. Now scientists know for a fact.
Messenger is the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury. It was launched in 2004.

So, Now's the time when you put off your self-improvement goals?
?Hi, so sorry but I can?t make my scheduled appointment?something came up, uh, are you available next week?? is often a text I receive around the Holiday times.? Everyone is so busy with their buying of presents, party planning, party going, hangover treatments, oh and not let?s forget the cold and flu season.?
Putting all that aside, of course, those things are happening?but where are you putting yourself on the list.? I?ve experienced that if you?re not the top on the list of priorities, then you?ll never be on the list at all.? And how often do you use other people, other experiences, other, other, other, all excuses to keep you from stepping into your Highest and Best??
Here?s the skinny?this can be a volatile time.? Emotions are running high, so much to do, pressure about spending on gifts, Holiday dinners, and then there?s the, ??Who?s invited, who?s not, why not, do I have to? Really?? conversations.?
Well, that?s where I step in.? There is a myth out there that says, ?Time heals everything.?? That?s hog wash.? How many people do you know that have held grudges for more than a year? Five years? Twenty years? Thirty years?? That?s my point.? They?ve continued the arguement and sometimes the war inside their own heads.? And the only person they are hurting are themselves.? I?ve had people mad and angry even after the person has died.? Come on?what are you getting out of that??
A few simple techniques can make the difference between having a wonderful Holiday season verses a Holiday war.?
1)? Get real with the issue.? Are you holding back to hurt someone?? It?s always you that is feeling the pain?you can?t hurt enough to make them feel it, I promise.
2)? Was it really that big of an issue or did it just develop into one over time?? Re-examine the incident with clarity of mind, not ego.? Ego?s love to keep you seperate from others but their true agenda is to keep you small.? And aren?t you tired of playing small?
3)? You spot what you?ve got.? Where have you acted the same way towards someone else?? Listen, we all are doing the best we can with what we have.? Do we make mistakes?? Of course, that?s how we learn.?
4)? Forgive.? Yes, I know.? I have had to forgive many a persons for the way I was treated growing up.? But this I know for a fact?I would not be the person I am, doing what I do, if they hadn?t done exactly what they did as I was making my way through this world.?
5)? There are no accidents!? I?m sure you?ve heard this and at some point believe it.? So, again, there are?NO accidents.? And in the bigger picture, do you know what that means?? There are NO victims! Period!? Get yourself out of victim mode.? You?re only hurting yourself?and besides, no one wants to be around a victim.? Believe me.
6)? Take a deep breathe, feeling your body, aware of your surroundings, each time they come into your head.? Just relax and breathe?and do that as many times as you need.? It releases tension, is calming, and will get you present.? Do it as many times as you need to regain your composure.? This way you will respond to interactions verse react to them.?

While it?s worth remembering that most Chinese web users don?t bother to circumvent the Great Firewall internet restrictions (as folks have ample homegrown social and entertainment services), the WSJ reckons that more people than ever are actually leaping the wall to check out YouTube or Twitter thanks to some fairly simple geeky tweaking.
All it takes is for the ?hosts? file inside a Windows or Mac computer ? or an Android phone ? to be modified with a list of alternative IP addresses for a blocked site you might want to access. This can be done for free. Increasingly, more and more tech-savvy Chinese web users are helping out by maintaining updated lists of which hosts tweaks still work, and then making these lists available online. Right now, these can be found all over the web in Chinese, even on Baidu?s Wenku e-books platform, as pictured here:

One such individual helping his fellow netizens leap the Great Firewall is Felix Hsu, whom the WSJ talked to. He says, ?Lots of netizens are eager to get to know what?s happening behind the wall, but it?s not easy for them.? Felix helps run a site (sadly, no link is given) that collates these workarounds. He explains that the free service they?re providing (which was started in October 2011) saw a massive spike in traffic recently as China?s leadership changeover was met with deliberate throttling and slowing of many Chinese internet services. For one 24-hour period at the start of this month, every single Google service was blocked in China ? before some of them (obviously not the long-blocked ones like G+ or YouTube) became accessible again.
I get the feeling that most Chinese people who do this are only interested in finding fun things that most of do to pass the time on the web, such as watching kitten videos on YouTube. Nonetheless, Chinese authorities keep a close eye on overseas sites and often block those that are deemed to be carrying news that?s too controversial. That?s why the New York Times is the latest high-profile site to be blocked in the country.

Specs and technology in gaming has 'become too advanced', according to former Capcom legend Keiji Inafune
Inafune was talking to Play magazine about Soul Sacrifice, a third-person action title for Vita with a concept he created. Play asked what it was about Soul Sacrifice than energised Inafune as a games designer.
"In the 25 years of gaming history that I have witnessed, there have been many technological revolutions and evolutions in the creation of games," Inafune replied. "However, recently the specs and technology have become too advanced, and I feel that the element of surprise is lost.
"When thinking about the next level of creativity, I thought that I could implement emotion in to the game system, such as 'emotional conflict', 'doubts' and 'the suffering of having to make the ultimate decisions' therefore taking a challenge with Soul Sacrifice that no-one has taken before."
It's an interesting time to make those comments, given the Wii U has just launched and the rumbling from Xbox 720 and PlayStation4 is growing louder by the day. But is Inafune right?

Thyroid Surgery: What to Expect
Thyroid surgery is the primary treatment for thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules and hyperthyroidism.? During the procedure, all or part of the butterfly-shaped thyroid gland located at the front of the throat is carefully removed.? Here, we'll take a closer look at what the procedure involves, plus we will discuss ways your body may change after thyroid surgery.About Thyroid Surgery
Surgery is normally used to treat thyroid problems in a number of cases.? For instance, if your doctor has diagnosed you with thyroid cancer or if it is suspected that thyroid cancer is developing, you are a likely candidate for thyroid surgery.? In addition, if you have a benign thyroid nodule that has begun to interfere with swallowing or breathing, or if you have a fluid filled thyroid nodule which returns after having been drained more than once, you are a candidate for surgery.? Thyroid surgery is also prescribed for hyperthyroidism and Graves Disease which does not respond to radioactive iodine or medications.
During thyroid surgery, you may have your entire thyroid gland removed, or you may need to have only a portion of your thyroid removed.? If you require a total thyroidectomy, the entire gland, along with the lymph nodes surrounding it will be removed.?
If you require a thyroid lobectomy, either with or without an isthmectomy, only the affected lobe will be removed.? With an isthmectomy, the isthmus, which is the band of tissue that connects the two lobes, will be removed as well.? Before finishing surgery, the surgeon will have the removed tissue analyzed to determine whether cancer is present.? If cancer is present within the cells, the surgeon will remove the remainder of the thyroid.? This is called a completion thyroidectomy.
In cases of hyperthyroidism caused by Graves Disease, a subtotal thyroidectomy will be performed.? In this thyroid surgery, one complete lobe, part of the second lobe, and the isthmus will be removed.
Thyroid surgery once required long incisions which completely opened the neck; today, many surgeons are conducting endoscopic thyroidectomies using a number of small incisions which allow surgical instruments and a tiny camera to be inserted into the surgical site.? Not only does this reduce the appearance of scars post-surgery, it also reduces recovery time and produces less pain than standard thyroidectomies do.
As with most modern surgeries, thyroid surgery is generally safe.? There are some complications which may occur due to the surgery, including a changed voice or persistent hoarseness brought on by nerve damage.? If the parathyroid glands are damaged or mistakenly removed during a total thyroidectomy, then hypoparathyroidism can result.? If you must undergo a total thyroidectomy, you will need to take synthetic thyroid hormone; this can also occur if you have a subtotal thyroidectomy or a lobectomy.
If you have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and have undergone thyroid surgery, you will more than likely require treatment with radioactive iodine after the surgery, to ensure that all the cancer cells and thyroid tissue are gone.?
If you have undergone thyroid surgery for hyperthyroidism, you may have low calcium levels; in this case, you will need to take calcium supplements.?

Business spending plans gauge rebounds

WASHINGTON - A gauge of planned U.S. business spending increased by the most in five months in October, but a fourth straight month of declines in shipments underscored the damage that fears of tighter fiscal policy next year are inflicting on the economy.
The Commerce Department said on Tuesday non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, rebounded 1.7 percent last month after falling 0.4 percent the prior month.
Economists had expected so-called core capital goods orders to fall 0.5 percent.
Shipments of non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, used to calculate equipment and software spending in the gross domestic product report, slipped 0.4 percent. It was the fourth straight month of declines in shipments.
The Commerce Department said there was no indication that superstorm Sandy, which lashed the East Coast in late October, had an immediate impact on factories in that region.
Businesses are cutting back on capital spending, wary of automatic government spending cuts and tax increases, known as the fiscal cliff, that are scheduled to kick in early next year unless the U.S. Congress and the Obama administration can agree on a plan to cut the budget deficits.
The fiscal cliff could drain about $600 billion from an already fragile economy. Business spending is also being undermined by the long-running debt problems in Europe and slowing global demand, especially in China.
Despite the headwinds, the manufacturing sector continues to grow, though modestly. Durable goods orders were unchanged in October as gains in machinery, fabricated metal products, and computer and electronic products offset the drag from automobiles, defense and civilian aircraft.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast orders for durable goods, items from toasters to aircraft that are meant to last at least three years, falling 0.6 percent last month after rising 9.2 percent in September.
Excluding transportation, orders rose 1.5 percent after increasing 1.7 percent in September.?

Investing In Israel: Time To Buy This Emerging Market

Nathan Rothschild is credited with creating the stock market axiom ?Buy on the sound of cannons, sell on the sound of trumpets.? The phrase means that the beginning of a war is a good time to buy stocks ? as there is usually a fair amount of panic leading up to war.
Through the years, investors have had every reason to avoid Israel.? Surrounded by neighbors sworn to its destruction, along with a soon to be nuclear armed Iran that constantly rattles its sabers at the tiny nation of just 7.8 million people (a little less than the population of the State of Virginia).
However, investors who feared putting their money to work in a country that is under constant threat have missed out on some big opportunities.? Israel is home to some of the most successful and innovative companies on the planet.
For example, Teva Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: TEVA) is the dominant player in generic drugs.
CheckPoint Software (Nasdaq: CHKP) is one of the leading IT security companies in the world. And the tiny country?s entrepreneurial spirit has fostered many successful small cap companies like Given Imaging (Nasdaq: GIVN), the maker of the pill camera and Elbit Systems (Nasdq: ESLT), makes drones, remote weapons systems and other defense related products.
Other than the United States, Israel has more companies listed on the Nasdaq than any other country.
But here is why you should consider investing in Israeli stocks now.? While it might seem counterintuitive to invest in a country that just got finished with a nasty skirmish with its enemies ? particularly one where nothing was accomplished (other than Hamas agreeing to stop firing rockets at Israeli civilians), history shows that now is the best time to invest in Israeli companies.
Over the past 12?years, if investors had the courage to invest their money at the start of hostilities (at the sounds of cannons) between Israel and the Palestinians, they fared very well, much better than if they?d invested in the S&P 500.
For example, on September 28, 2000, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon made an appearance on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, just steps from the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This enraged Palestinian Muslims who rioted for days, leading to clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians and eventually devolving into violence between more heavily armed factions.
Late 2000, was the early stages of the dot com collapse and Israeli stocks were not immune.? However, if you had invested in the TA-100 index, the 100 largest stocks on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, the day after Sharon?s infamous stroll, five years later, you?d be up 36%, while investors in the S&P 500 were still down 7%.
In December 2008, things got really bad between the two sides.? After repeated rocket fire by Hamas into Israel, the Israeli army retaliated, eventually sending troops into Gaza.
From a financial standpoint, the world was still smack dab in the middle of the economic crisis. The collapses of Lehman Brothers and Washington Mutual were just three months old. The bear market was raging. It was a very scary time to invest anywhere, especially in a country in armed conflict whose markets are dominated by technology companies.
Yet, if you invested in the TA-100 at the sound of cannons in 2008, you would have seen a three year return of 85%, versus the S&P 500?s 55%. If you still held those stocks today, you?d have doubled your money in the TA-100, a 101% return, while the S&P posted 76% gains.
And since November 14th of this year, when Israel assassinated Hamas? military leader, kicking off another wave of fighting, the TA-100 is up over 3%.
Interestingly, during the two bear markets of the past 12?years, the Israeli market bottomed first. In 2003, it bottomed about a month before U.S. markets. Surprisingly, the TA-100 bottomed in November 2008, before intense fighting began in December. U.S. stocks didn?t stop falling until March 2009.
Investing in any market when there is panic is usually a good idea.? And there often is panic before war breaks out.? History shows that investing in Israeli stocks during the times when it?s scariest is a great way to make significant profits over the next few years.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that free agent outfielder Shane Victorino is drawing interest from at least seven teams, including the Reds, Indians, Yankees, Rangers, Giants, Rays and Red Sox. While that?s one less than was reported by Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald earlier this month, that?s a pretty healthy market.
Victorino is coming off his worst season in the big leagues, but Heyman hears that several teams are willing to offer him at least three years. Of course, Victorino wouldn?t be a center fielder for all seven teams listed above, but he has expressed a willingness to play a corner outfield spot if the price is right.

High-dose opioid treatment associated with mental health and medical comorbidities
ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Most patients taking opioids for low back pain or other pain syndromes are prescribed low-to moderate doses, but a substantial number are given higher doses. Although there is no consensus on an absolute limit because tolerance varies over time among individual patients, what is known, however, is higher does are associated with elevated risks for side effects, addiction, overdoses and death. A study published by Oregon Health and Sciences University in The Journal of Pain showed that patients on higher doses of opioids had higher rates of psychiatric problems, co-prescriptions of sedatives and health care services utilization.
The Journal of Pain is the per-review publication of the American Pain Society.
For the study, the research team sought to examine correlates of higher dose opioid use among patients in primary care settings being treated for low back pain. The goals were to determine the prevalence of higher dose opioid prescribing, identify the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients receiving higher doses, and examine health services utilization patterns among high-dose users.
Electronic pharmacy and medical records were examined for 26,000 adults 18 and older diagnosed with low back pain, of which 61 percent received an opioid prescription. Among patients receiving long-term opioid treatment, nearly 9 percent received a higher dose in their final prescription. Patients receiving higher doses of opioid therapy were prescribed a median daily dose of 180 mg per day, which was seven times greater that patients receiving lower doses.
The analysis showed that chronic pain patients with comorbid psychiatric diagnoses are more likely to be prescribed opioids compared with patients without psychiatric problems. The authors found that the prevalence of mental health diagnoses increases with longer duration of opioid use. Studies have indicated a relationship between depression and persistent pain and that each could have a causative influence on the other. Thus, depression may lead to more opioid use and opioid use may cause or exacerbate depression.
The authors concluded their results should prompt physicians to screen opioid therapy candidates for mental health and substance use disorders.
Another finding reported in the study showed that patients in the higher dose group were frequent consumers of medical services, including visits to emergency departments. Also, higher dose patients had the largest number of different prescribers, which could indicate continued uncontrolled pain, continuity of care problems or "doctor shopping."

Saudi-backed religious center opens in Austria
VIENNA (AP) ? U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday urged Israel and Hamas to respect their cease-fire but said only mutual recognition of Israel's right to exist and an independent Palestine could ensure permanent peace in the region.
Ban commented during ceremonies launching a Saudi-sponsored and funded center in Vienna meant to promote dialogue between the world's main religions. Ban's pointed remarks were in contrast with other speakers who spoke in general terms about the need for religious understanding.
"I am determined to ensure that the cease-fire is sustained," he said about last week's agreement between Israel and Hamas committing both sides to stop hostilities and easing concerns of an Israeli invasion of Gaza.
Ban said that while both sides must adhere to the cease-fire, the ultimate goal in the region had to be a "two-state solution ending the (Israeli) occupation and the conflict," adding: "This is critical to regional stability."
The U.N. chief also said he is concerned about the destruction of religious artifacts by extremists in Mali, citing it as an example of the need to "promote long-term mutual understanding that transcends religious, national, cultural and ethnic boundaries."
Other dignitaries at the ceremonial launch at Vienna's ornate Hofburg palace included Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and his Austrian and Spanish counterparts, Michael Spindelegger and Jose Manual Garcia-Margallo y Marfil.
Their presence reflected their countries' backing for the center, even though the Saudis are playing the most prominent role in organizing it and meeting its expenses for the first three years.
The three spoke in over-all terms about the need to overcome religious differences and expressed hope that the center would achieve that goal.
But Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, in charge of interfaith dialogue for the Vatican departed from the script, indirectly criticizing Saudi Arabia for not allowing any religion other than Islam.
"Everyone is expecting ... honesty, vision and credibility" from the center, he said, adding it must work for "religious freedom in all its aspects for everybody," including "in countries where such freedoms are not guaranteed."
The center's board consists of three Christians, three Muslims, a Jew, a Buddhist and a Hindu. Backers hope it will promote increased tolerance not only in Europe but also in Saudi Arabia, where the ruling royal family must move cautiously in implementing reforms because of resistance from the powerful clergy.
But detractors, including Austria's Green party and moderate Muslim groups, say Saudi Arabia ? home to the conservative brand of Wahhabi Islam ? is the last country that should be hosting initiatives on religious coexistence. They say the center could be used to spread Islamic fundamentalism in Europe.
