South Dakota college football roundup: SDSU defeats Southern Illionois

CARBONDALE, Ill. ? Austin Sumner tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Tiefenthaler with seven seconds left in the game as South Dakota State rallied to defeat Southern Illinois 16-12 on Saturday.

South Dakota State (6-2, 5-1 Missouri Valley) also got field goals of 28, 41 and 33 yards from Justin Syrovatka.

Sumner was sacked six times, but still managed to complete 26 of 25 passes for 284 yards.

Kory Faulkner completed 20 of 30 passes for 122 yards for Southern Illinois (5-5, 4-3) and was sacked three times.

Bo Helm recovered a fumble for South Dakota State.

Youngstown St. 13, South Dakota 10

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio ? Jamaine Cook rushed for a season-high 203 yards and a touchdown and Youngstown State held on to defeat South Dakota 13-10 Saturday.

The Penguins (5-4, 2-4 Missouri Valley Conference) led 13-0 after Cook?s 1-yard run with 10:28 left in the third quarter.

The Coyotes (1-8, 0-6), who had only 88 yards total offense in the first half, finally scored on Kevin Robb?s 37-yard field goal later in the period, then on Jasper Sanders? 22-yard run with 10:13 remaining.

Cook?s 42 rushing attempts were the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. He surpassed 1,000 yards for the third straight season.

Kurt Hess tied Youngstown State?s career passing touchdowns record of 51 with his 3-yard TD pass to Nate Adams.

Minnesota State University-Mankato 27,

University of Sioux Falls 13

MANKATO, Minn. ? The No. 6-ranked Minnesota State University-Mankato Mustangs topped No. 17 Sioux Falls 27-13 Saturday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football game.

USF, which is 8-2 overall and in the NSIC, was led by quarterback Taylor Perkins, who completed 22 of 37 passes for 203 yards and had an interception. Perkins added a 1-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter and had 21 rushes for 35 yards on the ground.

Mankato led 20-3 at halftime and outgained the Cougars 314-246 in total offense.

Austin VanHove caught seven passes for 52 yards for the Cougars.

Winona State 73, Augustana 35

SIOUX FALLS ? Winona State set a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record with 781 yards of total offense in a 73-35 win over Augustana Saturday.

Winona (8-2 NSIC) threw for 525 yards and rushed for 257.

Augustana (4-6) played in its final home game of the season and allowed the most points in a game since 1954, a season the Vikings gave up 68 points to South Dakota State.

Augustana quarterback Josh Hanson became the school?s all-time leader in career touchdown passes, throwing three against Winona.

He has 71 career TDs. The Vikings had 315 yards of total offense, including 138 rushing yards and a TD from Dajon Newell on 13 attempts.

Mitchell natives Jason and Justin Greenway each had two carries for Augustana. Justin totaled nine yards on the ground and Jason had two yards.

Black Hills State University 36,

Western New Mexico 24

SILVER CITY, N.M. ? BHSU?s Ward Anderson threw for 301 yards and Jeremy Woods rushed for 94 yards in the Yellow Jackets? 36-24 win over Western New Mexico Saturday.

BHSU (2-7) played the game six days after freshman teammate Nick Bazemore was found dead in his dorm room. The team returned to practice Tuesday and picked up its second win of the season six days later.

BHSU finished with 431 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers.

Nebraska-Kearney 59, SD Mines 7

RAPID CITY ? South Dakota School of Mines and Technology scored first but allowed 59 unanswered points in a 59-7 loss to Nebraska-Kearney Saturday.

In the loss, the Hardrockers tallied 197 yards of offense while their opponent had 618 yards.

Jamel Rover and Chris Sawdey led SD Mines (2-7) with 18 rushing yards apiece. Mike Zanutto had 157 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Evan Sanders also saw time at QB with seven completions for 22 yards and an interception.

Presentation 50, Trinity Bible 18

ABERDEEN ? Presentation College held Trinity Bible scoreless through three quarters in a 50-18 rout Saturday.

The Saints picked up the win in their final game of the season, ending the year with a 2-8 record. Presentation?s other win came in the season opener against Haskell Indian Nations.

Winner native and junior running back Eric Schueth caught a TD in the victory.

Mayville State 34, Dakota State 33

MADISON ? Dakota State committed six turnovers and trailed 34-7 after three quarters, but rallied in the fourth quarter.

Still, DSU lost 34-33 in the Trojans? regular-season finale.

DSU tied the game on a John Niesen 1-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left on the clock, but the point after touchdown was no good, giving Mayville the win.

DSU quarterback Brandon large was 22-of-36 with three interceptions and 175 yards. Niesen had 17 carries for 85 yards.

Northern State 52, Minnesota-Crookston 20

ABERDEEN ? Twenty-one first-quarter points led to Northern State?s 52-20 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over Minnesota-Crookston Saturday.

In the Wolves? victory, running back Richard Haley had 22 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback A.J. Barge completed 12 of 20 passes for 91 yards and Marquis Mulkey had a 35-yard interception return for a TD.

Northern State (6-4) is on a three-game winning streak.
