Enquirer Reporter Dan Horn?takes an in-depth look at what happened to the ?fracking tax??Ohio Gov. John Kasich proposed when he pitched his budget a few months ago in a story out today.

?An Enquirer analysis has found that 10 of the largest oil and natural gas companies and their main political action committee have pumped more than $660,000 into Ohio legislators? campaign coffers since 2010,? Horn writes.

?They?ve given mostly to Republicans, who got 91.5 percent of oil and gas contributions, and most often to Republicans in Ohio?s House, who would later decide the fate of the fracking tax.?

But how this money affects legislators? votes is less than clear.

?That?s a fair amount of money to invest in state campaigns,? said Denise Roth Barber, managing director of the nonpartisan National Institute on Money in State Politics. ?That?s bound to have an effect. At the very least, it gives you access to lawmakers during these debates.?

A spokesman for?House Speaker Bill Batchelder, R-Medina, who received more than $227,000 from oil and gas companies, PACs and individual donors with ties to the industry, has a different take:??Campaign contributions do not, in any way, affect legislative outcomes in the House of Representatives,? the spokesman, Mike Dittoe, said.

What do you think? How much of an impact do campaign contributions have at the state level?

Not sure what fracking is or how it works? Check out our graphic explaining the process.
